Speaking Activity# 1 on Nov. 8 and 9 ( I Believe Speech )

Dear Seniors, get ready for your oration on Monday next week. Take note that the speech which you made last quarter ( 1st qtr.project ) is the piece you are going to deliver this Monday.

This is called Chapter Zero:

If you were to change one event or chapter from the Iliad, and replace it with your own story, what chapter or episode will that be?

Write your “version” of the story.

Narrate how it will affect the entire story or ending of the Iliad.

Bonus Blog (10 pts.)

Define HERO or HEROISM. Who do you consider the hero of the epic? Why do you consider him as the epic's hero? Cite evidences from the story.

(Note: Since this is a bonus blog, anyone who opts to answer this question should see to it that his composition is substantial and well-organized. Short and/or empty (in ideas) journals will not merit any point.)

QUESTIONS FOR BOOKS 12-17

ANSWER 1 QUESTION ONLY.

1. The Greeks strongly believe in FATE or DESTINY, that is, nothing happens unless it is destined to be so. Does this mean that, in the Trojan War, the heroes' free and strong will to win is immaterial? Do you agree that the victories of the Trojans (in books 12 and 17) and the Greeks (in 13, 14, and 16) are all willed by the Gods? Explain your answer. Cite textual details.

2. For the Greeks, the Gods are personalities with human failings. This is clearly seen in the character of Zeus in books 11-17. Cite some events that show Zeus' weaknesses.

3. Patroclos is a noble comrade and warrior. Do you agree? Prove your answer by citing details from the book.

Iliad

Answer ONE question only.

1. Analyze the character of Achilles as shown in Books 9-11. Are his decisions appropriate for a king like him? Why/ why not? What kind of warrior is he?

2. The ancient Greeks believe that their gods are wise and just. Is this belief evident in Iliad, especially in Books 7-11? Prove your answer by citing proofs from the story.

3. Wars do not only claim many lives but also spoil/destroy a man's character. Do you agree with this statement? Cite details from the book to prove your answer.

1. Narrate how King Agamemnon shows stubbornness of heart in books 1-5.

· Cite modern day examples/people who display the same stubbornness of heart.

2. “Hera is considered to be fair/equal whenever she goes into battle”

· Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

· Cite examples from the first five books of the Iliad that prove your stand.

3. Between Paris and Menelaus, who do you consider as a nobler/greater/more honorable man?

· What incidents support your answer?

· Who can be cited as a modern day Paris/Menelaus? Why?
